About Glutolin

The year is 1912.

With the abdication of the (last) 6-year-old Emperor Pu-Yi, China becomes a republic; the “unsinkable” Titanic is struck by an iceberg on its maiden voyage and sinks to the bottom of the Atlantic with over 1,500 people on board. In Egypt, the now world-famous bust of Nefertiti is found during excavations at Tell El-Amarna, and at Hoechst, a subsidiary of IG Farbenindustrie headquartered in Frankfurt am Main, a certain Dr. Sponsel discovers cellulose ether.

Even though it would be another 20 years before this led to the world’s first groundbreaking methylcellulose wallpaper paste, Dr. Sponsel’s discoveries and the specialized processes developed based on them are still considered the foundation for virtually all paste formulations today. In 1932, Wiesbaden-based Kalle GmbH & Co.KG – also a Hoechst subsidiary until 1997 – took over the production of the glue and paste products already marketed by Hoechst under the brand name “Glutolin.” Since 2003, production has been carried out according to traditional original recipes by us – Glutolin Renovierungsprodukte GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of PUFAS Werk KG based in Hann. Münden.

In addition to the traditional pastes and adhesives, however, other painting supplies are also manufactured here. For example, the popular Glutofill filler putty, smoothing and surface putties, the Glutoclean skin care line, etc. Much to the delight of tradespeople, but certainly also to the delight of Dr. Sponsel, who would surely be proud that his discoveries are still used every day.
